It’s 2023, so there are tech alternatives to standard workflows to explore when patients need rapid palliation. Beyond the obvious helpful and easily implementable tool of virtual consults, Wash U recently shared a creative strategy of virtual simulations where a patient with a recently available diagnostic CT scan could skip an additional dedicated simulation scan. Today we bring you a similar experience from Mayo Clinic Florida. In it they describe the logistics and outcomes for 45 patients receiving virtual sims for simple palliative radiation with opposed fields for painful bone mets. First of all, for the first five patients planned with both virtual and standard sims, there was no significant difference in target coverage. Most importantly, when compared to a matched cohort, mean time from consult to treatment was decreased from roughly 8 to 4 days. | Bush, Adv Radiat Oncol 2023
