A startling Utah population-based cohort study reveals women with any endometriosis have 4x the likelihood of developing ovarian cancer, while women with specifically ovarian endometriomas and/or deep infiltrating endometriosis have 10x the likelihood of ovarian cancer and nearly 20x the likelihood of type 1 (molecularly indolent) ovarian cancer. The theory is that the proliferative process of endometriosis is a breeding ground for ovarian cancers, particularly the type 1 variety, with both processes sharing a similar genetic underpinning. Regardless of the exact reason for the link, these women are clearly deserving of ovarian cancer screening. | Barnard, JAMA 2024
