Headline: Could a traditional chinese medicine formulation reduce mucositis for patients receiving RT for HNSCC?
The Study: Biyan Qingdu Granula is a traditional chinese medicine formulation of different herbs that is sometimes used for patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma. In this randomized trial, 731 patients receiving RT or CRT for NPC were randomized to receive BQG during treatment to see if it reduced nasopharyngeal secretions and oral mucositis. Six weeks after treatment, BQG was associated with a significantly lower rate of severe nasopharyngeal secretions (12.4% v 20%) and grade 3+ oral mucositis (12.3% v 22.4%).
