Headline: 3-fraction partial breast irradiation results in relatively little fibrosis that is non-inferior to 5-fraction PBI.
The Study: In this randomized, non-inferiority trial, 308 patients with any grade T1N0 breast cancer or grade 1-2 DCIS ≤2.5 cm who had breast conservation surgery who were planned to receive APBI were randomized to receive 30 Gy in 5 fractions for 24 Gy in 3 fractions. All patients were treated prone. At 2 years the rate of grade 2+ fibrosis was 18.3% with 30/5 and 12.3% with 24/3. There was 1 local recurrence in the 5-fraction arm and 5 in the 3-fraction arm. | Citation
