Headline: A third large trial demonstrates a simultaneous lumpectomy boost during whole breast radiation is safe and effective.
The Study: Like RTOG 1005 and UK IMPORT HIGHT, the phase 3 HYPO-SIB trial randomized 2179 women receiving whole breast radiation to sequential versus concomitant/simultaneous integrated boost (SIB). Women in the SIB arm received 40 Gy to the whole breast and 48 Gy to the lumpectomy cavity all in 16 (not 15) fractions. Local control at 5 years was an impressive 98% either way and cumulative grade 2+ fibrosis was 7-8% either way.
TBL: A simultaneous lumpectomy boost is now a standard of care option, and it would be great if IMRT could be approved at physician discretion. | Krug, ASTRO 2024
