Some people think the field of radiation oncology suffers from a lack of imagination, and part of it stems from the name itself: whoever said the therapeutic benefits of radiation are limited to the world of cancer? We’ve seen exciting headway in cardiology and rheumatology, and today we bring you a review on the use of therapeutic radiation to stem the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. The basic thought is that radiation can dampen neuroinflammation that appears to underpin classic pathways for the accumulation of amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles. Most evidence is low-dose brain radiation (something like 2 Gy x 5) in mouse models, but, as we already know such a treatment to be safe in humans, this area is ripe for further exploration. | Kaul, Int J Radiat Oncol Biol Phys 2023
