In April 2021 the 21st Century Cures Act mandated immediate release of test results to patients who could then receive potentially distressing news void of context or a treatment plan outlined by a physician. This editorial touches on the many challenges of this policy, including physicians having to learn new forms of giving bad news when a report has already been read. This can even include preempting the problem by preparing a patient prior to a test about potentially ambiguous results they may see. Table 1 summarizes recommendations for both framing results prior to their receipt as well as clarifying them after the fact. | Hahne, JCO Pract Oncol 2023
