Top Line: What is the risk of recurrence with radiation is used as the definitive treatment for nasal cavity cancer?
The Study: Primary surgery and adjuvant radiation is the typical approach for cancer of the nasal cavity. In the anterior nasal cavity, this could potentially mean disfiguring surgery to remove the nose. In this retrospective cohort study from MSKCC, 44 patients with anterior nasal cavity cancers were treated nonoperatively with primary radiation. Proton therapy was used in 66% and IMRT was used in 34%. The majority, 84% received concurrent chemotherapy, and 34% received induction chemotherapy. The most common total dose was 70 Gy or higher (86%). At 5 years, the rate of local recurrence was 16%, all of which were squamous cell carcinomas. PFS was 62% and OS was 80% at 5 years. Having cT3 or cT4 disease or an unresectable tumor was associated with worse PFS.
TBL: This study found that patients with anterior nasal cavity cancer had excellent local control outcomes with primary radiation (and usually concurrent chemotherapy). | Mankuzhy, JAMA Oncol 2025
