Top Line: What is the risk of hypopituitarism after SRS for nonfunctioning pituitary tumors?
The Study: This large, multicenter retrospective study took a look at 869 patients with nonfunctioning pituitary tumors that were treated with single fraction SRS. The median marginal prescription dose was 14 Gy. The rate of new hypopituitarism was 9.9% at 5 years and 15.3% at 10 years. At the 10 year mark, the rate of cortisol deficiency was 8%, the rate of thyroid deficiency was 8.3%, the rate of gonadotroph deficiency was 3.5%, and the rate of growth hormone deficiency was 4.7%. From a dosimetry standpoint, max dose >10 Gy to the pituitary stalk was associated with the risk of developing hypopituitarism. The rate of local control was 95.5% at 5 years and 88.8% at 10 years. Higher dose (>14 Gy in 1 fraction) was associated with better local control.
