Prospective mucositis assessments were performed across 47 patients receiving myeloablative conditioning prior to stem cell transplant with either high-dose (12 Gy / 6 or 13.2 Gy / 8) total body irradiation (n=20) or chemotherapy (n=27) at U Wash. Contrary to conventional wisdom, oral mucositis was significantly worse in the chemo cohort, peaking at day 14 (see Figure 1c). On the other hand, salivary flow was significantly slower in the radiation cohort 3 months out, though theoretically this is expected to recover. The authors highlight these results debunk fear of debilitating oral mucositis seen with TBI of the past, namely 3x daily Cobalt-60 treatments to >12 Gy. | Ebadi, Adv Radiat Oncol 2025
